Difficult Situation & Depression Before Experience: A war going on which feels pointless to him, he was strongly opposed, and felt sad, depressed.Experience Report:
Depression From War That Feels Pointless
“...For weeks I had been in heavy depression and sadness; as a conscious objector and strongly opposed to war I could feel the hopeless stupidity of it all . . .”
Cosmic Understanding
“Suddenly, everything became crystal clear, clearer, more definite than anything in normal existence. There was also an amazing ‘knowingness’ rather than knowledgeableness, that is, I knew not by application to study, but because it was in my mind from the beginning and had so existed as an attribute, a primary possession.”
“I was my own questioner and answerer, and fast as the questions came, out trundled the answer, so easy to comprehend and always, always right, the only possible answer.”
“Why, the thought kept running in my mind, in our everyday life we are asleep, drugged as under a spell; eyes unseeing and minds clogged, ears stone deaf and senses completely dulled with the heavy stupor of day-to-day existence and the senseless round of useless duties, routine and habits . . .”
“In that state, death was a laughing impossibility, the thought of death — well, it was too absurd to consider, even for one moment. Death was and is not.”

Surrounded By Bright Light, It Also
Suffused Surroundings
“I seemed to be aware of a radiance surrounding me, everywhere it penetrated; it was a light that seemed to have no visible source, no point of emanation, but it was found, seen and felt everywhere.”
Wanted to Stay in Experience But Pulled Back
“I longed, completely and fully, to stay in that state forever, but I felt my earth-bound body slowly pulling me back to ‘reality.’ I tried desperately to hold on to the vision, for I knew the pangs of anguish with the thought of returning to the world, the bitterness, the oneliness, the drabness, the hate and the envy of life. I can only describe it as the feeling of an angel banished from the courts of light. All effort was unveiling.”
Partial Ego-Death? — Had Partially Lost Sense of Surroundings, But Gradually Came Back
“I felt my earth-bound body slowly pulling me back to ‘reality.’ I tried desperately to hold on to the vision, for I knew the pangs of anguish with the thought of returning to the world.”
“I became aware that my head was resting against the side of the horizontal storage tank, and I was standing relaxed, gazing towards the windows facing the road and through which the morning light shone. There was absolute silence everywhere (though hundreds of people were, in fact, round about . . . Then gradually, very faint at first and then with increasing sound I heard moving machinery; the wheels were revolving; . . . was moving; the pan of the scale tipped down. All this happened on the third floor of the Kersal Vale, Manchester, a factory of Cussons, Sons & Co. The memory was intense for several years and I wrote it down then.”
